Through to the round of 16

A moment of glory: Banyana Banyana got their taste of glory in the last minute of the knockout stages of the women's world cup by securing their first world cup win in history. Banyana played Italy in an encounter that both teams wanted to win as this was the last knockout stage match for both teams. The match was filled with a mixture of emotions from both camps as everyone wanted to win the match to advance to the round of 16 of the women's world cup. Thembi Kgatlana scored a goal in the dying minutes of extra time to secure a much-needed win for South Africa leaving the score at 3-2 at fulltime. Coach Desiree Ellis stated her words of gratitude after the match by saying that "It's freaking amazing".

Valuable lessons to be learned over the knockout stages: During the course of the knockout stages, there were valuable lessons that could be identified going forward to the round of 16. The South African women's team is a good team with a lot of quality players; however, gaps should be closed to go even further than the round of 16 in the women's world cup. Gaps such as closing in on set pieces, and tactical positioning when in defence are gaps that should be closed going forward.

It is known that each team has its problems during tournaments, however as a nation, we will give Banyana Banyana all the support they need to go even further in the tournament. Their next encounter in the women's world cup is against the Netherlands in the round of 16.

History makers: The moment of truth is that Banyana Banyana is a phenomenal team and has displayed it on countless occasions by firstly winning WAFCON and now displaying a match filled with determination and hard work against Italy. Props to Banyana Banyana, we keep on moving forward with them.
